How it Began

Parachute Home was founded in Venice, California in 2014 with the goal of bringing more comfort to consumers through premium, accessible bedding. Onboarding and HR Simplified

Liz Duffie joined Parachute as the Head of People and Culture just over two years ago, and was tasked with building out Parachute’s HR function. When Liz came on board, Parachute had already been a Justworks customer for some time — they had only six employees when they first got started with Justworks, but have hired many more since then. Liz said it was really easy for her to get started on the platform, too, and that everyone who’s onboarded has had an easy time with it as well.

“I definitely use Justworks on the daily,” she said. “The search feature and the profiles of the employees are very helpful.” Liz will usually pull up employee profiles when having conversations with a manager about somebody’s career path, so having that information be so accessible is key. “I love being able to track all of their histories very easily.”

Running Payroll with More Confidence

When Liz first joined Parachute, there were roughly 40 employees — now, they have over 150, and they’re looking to add more than 50 new hires by the end of 2021. A large percentage of their team is made up of distributed hourly employees, so Parachute relies heavily on the timecard functionality in Justworks to track the differing schedules their employees maintain every day. And being able to track time in this way makes running payroll that much easier.

“Payroll is probably my favorite part about the platform,” Liz said. Given the number of initiatives and tasks she has to manage in her role, the ease of running payroll is one of the most helpful features for her. With the platform automating and simplifying the payroll process, Liz doesn’t have to spend time cross-checking and verifying numbers and figures. “The ease in which payroll processes requires minimal oversight and I can trust that it gets done accurately!”

Peace of Mind Through Reliable Support

When it comes to running a business, having a partner to help with the tough stuff is invaluable. And for Liz, Justworks provides that peace of mind. “Any of those little things that I don’t have to wake up at 2 a.m. worrying about are the things that make the platform valuable to me, and it’s usually those details that are very compliance-related.”

Ensuring her business is on top of important laws, regulations, and deadlines is no easy feat, especially for a smaller business with distributed teams. That’s why Liz is such a big fan of the regular communications from Justworks. “The reminders Justworks sends out about changes to minimum wage or sick leave requirements are really helpful — it’s good to know about upcoming changes that could impact our employees or the business.”

Having reliable, real-time support is also something that Liz values about Justworks. The fact that any Parachute employee can reach out to a Justworks team member via phone, email, Slack, and SMS means Liz spends less time answering questions. “We review all of the support platforms in our onboarding — when employees come to HR with payroll or benefits questions, the first thing we do is point them to those channels. And if it’s not solved that way, then we’ll jump in.”

The account managers at Justworks are also an essential resource for Parachute. Having a dedicated rep whose goal is to help ensure they have the best possible service and experience makes a big difference, especially as Parachute continues their expansion plans. “When opening in new states, they’re definitely helpful,” Liz explained. “If we get a new state compliance notification that we haven’t dealt with before, having our Justworks rep. walk us through it saves my team a tremendous amount of time and teaches us along the way.” For Parachute, knowing Justworks has their back makes the tough stuff a bit easier to navigate.
